"Charlie" - Beautiful Purebred Coonhound Need a Home

Meet Charlie!

Charlie is a beautiful Redbone Coonhound who is looking for her forever home through PAWS of Coronado Animal Shelter. Charlie was relinquished to the shelter by her owner for fighting with the other resident dog. The caring folks at PAWS contacted the trainers at The Collared Scholar for help. We stepped in, picked Charlie up and took her to our doggy dude ranch for a full assessment and some training.

Turns out, Charlie LOVES LOVES LOVES playing with other dogs. She is incredible with dogs of all shapes and sizes. We believe the aggression was triggered by food as she can be a little protective at the food bowl around other dogs only. Our trainers have been working hard to correct the problem and we anticipate a full recovery. Right now, the problem is being managed by simply crating her at mealtimes.

Charlie is 5 years young with TONS of energy. She loves to get out and play and is so incredibly sweet! She would love to accompany you on a hike or a nice long walk on the beach. She would love a home with another active dog but she isn't all that great with cats. She is crate trained and walks wonderfully on leash.

Charlie comes with follow up training from The Collared Scholar. If interested, please email Meagan, her trainer at meagan@collared-scholar.com

Batya, the St. Bernard Needs YOU

Batya was one of the 10 dogs rescued from an overcrowded Taiwan shelter in February. When she arrived at the Animal Rescue Outreach Center, she was in bad shape. She was emaciated. With her build, she should have weighed at least 125lbs. Poor Batya however weighed in at a staggering 47lbs. We could see and feel every single bone in her body and she had horrific pressure sores from the spots that hit the kennel where she was kept for 24 hours per day.

You see, Batya had some issues with the other doggies at TUAPA so she was confined to a crate. Solitary confinement for this sweet lady. And she only got out of her crate for 1 hour per week (IF her volunteer made it to work).

Her situation was devastating. So we decided to step in and rescue her.

When Batya arrived at the shelter, they estimated her to be around 7 years old. When she arrived at our facility, she was weak, dehydrated and completely emaciated. After we got a good meal in her belly and gave her all the fresh water she could want for, Batya perked up and began acting like a puppy! We wondered if she really was 7 years old or if the shelter simply assumed she was old based on her physical apprearance.

After getting her on a regular feeding schedule and giving her plenty of fresh water, it was time for Batya to visit the vet. Dr. Alex at Advanced Care Veterinary Hospital spent a remarkable 2 hours with our girl, checking her over from head to toe.

Unfortunately, Batya's diagnosis, although completely manageable, was a bit of a blow to our tiny rescue. First, Batya was supposed to arrive spayed. She instead, arrived in heat. Second, she was diagnosed with Entropion, a condition where her eyelids curl under and the lashes scratch her eyes. It's a painful condition that causes her not to want to open her eyes all that much. She will require corrective surgery to fix the problem. She has an ear infection and is terrible need of a dental. And there is some concern about her jaw. You see, Batya's tongue ALWAYS hangs out the side of her mouth. It appears her jaw is actually crooked. Xrays will be done in order to get to the root of the problem. But the tongue, since it regularly drags on the ground, and picks up anything and everything is covered in abrasions and is bringing loads of bacteria into the mouth which has caused extensive ulcerations. There is some talk of corrective surgery for that condition as well although that will come secondary to the spay, entropion surgery and dental.

The good news is, the vet confirmed Batya's age to be a mere 1.5 years. We knew she behaved like a puppy and there was no way she could be 7 years old!

Batya has a long life ahead of her and she is facing it with a smile. She is so happy and has completely forgotten about the hardship she endured in Taiwan! Our little rescue is now reaching out to you for help. Our vet bills are in the thousands for Batya. We can't get her the care she needs without your help.

Please consider donating to help save Batya, a sweet and happy girl who so desperately needs a second shot at life!

Click the link below to donate. Even a small contribution - $1 or $2 will help. And please help us spread the word. If you can't donate, we understand. But tell your friends, families and co-workers about Batya's cause.

We will also have several fundraisers throughout the month of March - training classes, sales etc to raise funds for our girl and will keep you posted.

Thank you from the staff and Big Sloppy Kisses from our girl Batya!

ADORABLE Piper needs a home!

Piper is a little 2-year-old female, white with tan, rough coated Terrier mix weighing in at a petite 14 lbs.You can tell from her pictures that she is a pretty little girl. With her beautiful carmel colored eyes and a brown nose...and you just gotta love the ears. :) Piper is a bit unsure of new people. It is great to watch her transformation in foster. Every day her true playful personailty comes out a little bit more. She loves to play and interacts well with other dogs. Piper would do best in a home with at least one other dog to bond with or a stable pack. Piper is up-to-date on her vaccinations, rabies, spayed, and has received a clean bill of health from the vet. Pineapple, severely abused, still has faith in humanity

This is the story written about Pineapple from one of the shelter volunteers in Taiwan. Pineapple will be headed to San Diego on 2/15 for a chance at a new life.

"We rescued “Pineapple” on 12/22/2010 , the case reporter Ms. Yang told us Pineapple was abandoned in her neighborhood  by his owner about half a year ago, and Pineapple had been very weak for about a week already when she called us.  At first we thought the wounds on Pineapple’s back were caused by dog-fighting, but when we sent him to the hospital for emergency treatments, the doctor told us he was very likely abused by someone poured hot oil on his back because when the doctor tried to shave and clean his back, his back was greasy and his skin peeled off  piece by piece.

Our guess is that someone in the nei ghborhood doesn't like stray dogs around, so poured hot oil to scare them away. Luckily, Ms. Yang noticed that Pineapple was hurt and called for help.

Pineapple stayed in the hospital for a week and he is now back to the TUAPA shelter under Dr. Jimmy’s care.  When we saw the wounds on his back, we couldn’t believe anyone would do such a terrible thing to a poor stray animal.  And what amazed we were..despite everything he has been through, Pineapple didn't lose his faith in humanity.  He is still this loving, trusting and forgiving boy who just wants to be around people, although he is independent.

Pineapple is safe for now living at the TUAPA shelter, but without the fur on the majority part of his body, he's vulnerable and very likely to be picked on by his cellmates and gets hurt if a fight breaks out.   That's why we are seeking your help.  Pineapple deserves to have a good life!  People have failed him once, let's not fail him again.  Please help and share his story to anyone you know, so he can have a chance to live safely and happily for the rest of his life with his human family.  Thank you for reading and sharing his story!"

The hair on Pineapple's back is starting to grow back. He will be coming to San Diego on February 15th and he will live with a trainer so he can receive love, care, and training until he finds his forever home. If you are interested in adopting Pineapple, please call 619-916-8710

Here are his stats:
Sex: Male (Neutered)
Breed: Unknown
Age: 2-3 years old
Good with Dogs: SOME
Good with Cats: NO
Good with Kids: YES

Pineapple is a typical Taiwanese dog. He is very loyal and protective. He can learn to live with another dog but he won't be the type of dog you can take to the dog park. He will be a very loyal companion.

Timmy, a sweet, shy boy from Taiwan is looking for a foster or forever home!

He is coming to San Diego on 2/15 from Taiwan and is looking for a foster or forever home.

Here are his stats:

Sex: Male (Neutered)
Weight: 25lbs
Good with Dogs: YES
Good with Cats: Unknown
Good with Kids: YES (but shy at first)

Timmy is current on his vaccinations and in perfect health. If you are interested in adopting or fostering Timmy, please contact 619-916-8710.

Bernie needs a Foster or Forever home!!!

Bernie is a highly intelligent and curious JRT who is full of personality. He loves people, other JRTs (after a proper introduction), and chilling with his peeps. He's very affectionate, will lick your face off, and loves sleeping with you in bed. Because he is a young 3-year old, male JRT, Bernie will need a little stimulation. Regular walks or hikes will probably suffice. Bernie isn't destructive, but he doesn't like being left alone for too long. He is crate trained but will need a little house training refresher course once in his new forever home. Bernie's a very handsome boy with a beautiful white with brown markings as you can see in his picture, and a docked tail. He is a rough coat that has been trimmed since he looked more like Bob Marley with dreadlocks when we pulled him from the shelter. :) Bernie is highly intelligent and knows some tricks. This dog's tail is always wagging. His nickname is Mr. Wiggles! If you are ready to start out on your new adventure with a Jack Russell Terrier as a lifelong companion, Bernie is definitely the one for you. Bernie has been neutered and is up to date on his vaccinations and has received a clean bill of health from the vet. Make a difference in a dog's life this New Year and remember, saving just one dog won't change the world, but it will surely change the world for that one dog!

Bernie is currently staying at The Collared Scholar for a training refresher. He is ready to move on to a new foster home or forever home. For more information, visit Russell Rescue or call us at 619-916-8710.
